HIRING GUIDE

5 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Rive Animator

A strong Rive animator should understand motion design, interactive state logic, runtime constraints, and developer handoff. Ask these questions before approving a quote or production schedule.

1. Can you show interactive Rive work?

Ask for live .riv examples with hover, tap, loading, success, error, or data-driven states. A video reel proves visual motion, but it does not prove that the file is interactive or ready for a product runtime.

2. How will product states be controlled?

The animator should map product events to a state machine or data-bound properties. For new Rive projects, data binding is the more flexible approach; existing input-based files can still be supported. The important point is having a clear contract between animation and code.

3. Which runtimes do you prepare for?

Web, Flutter, and React Native teams can share the same Rive asset, but renderer support, layout, loading, and event handling still require planning. Confirm the target platforms before animation begins.

4. What exactly will I receive?

Expect the editable .riv file, organized artboards, sensible naming, documented states or properties, and implementation notes. Ask whether custom artwork, fonts, images, and revision rounds are included.

5. How do you test the handoff?

A professional handoff includes testing the default state, transitions, pointer behavior, layout at target sizes, and the developer-facing control names. The animator should also explain how integration questions are handled after delivery.

Useful information to send

  • Product link or Figma file
  • Target platform and screen placement
  • Required states and user actions
  • Whether character design or rigging is needed
  • Deadline and realistic budget range

Warning signs

  • Only video samples and no live Rive examples
  • No plan for naming, state logic, or source delivery
  • A quote based only on animation duration
  • No questions about platform or implementation
  • Unclear ownership of artwork and source files

Choose a Rive specialist for product work

Product animation is successful when designers and developers can iterate without rebuilding the file. Review the interactive Rive portfolio, compare Rive animation pricing, or send your brief to discuss the states and handoff your product needs.
